ESSENTIAL OILS AND AROMA-MASSAGE
Dr. Maria Teresa Lucheroni

Essential oils are precious blends of naturally perfumed elements produced by a wide variety of plants, and are endowed with multiple positive properties. They are perceived by our sense of smell and penetrate our skin. They can therefore be added to massage oils, considerably increasing the benefits of a massage and the effectiveness of the procedure.

Subjects covered in the course:

- What are essential oils?
- General characteristics of essential oils and how they affect human beings
- How to distinguish the quality of essential oils
- Methods of extraction
- Properties of different essential oils: stress-relieving, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, relaxing, invigorating, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, draining, circulatory stimulant, regenerating, skin care, depurative, etc.
- Testing our sense of smell and ability to recognize an essence.
- The principal essential oils used in massage, description of their specific properties.

The course will dwell on the energy-giving and symbolic aspects of essential oils: this original approach is especially important if we are to customize our practice and use essential oils in the framework of a holistic concept of massage, taking into account the psychological and physical characteristics of each patient. This approach deals with:

- Synergies between essential oils and therapeutical massage in treating various disorders, affecting muscles and joints, the digestive tract, the respiratory tract, the skin, blood circulation, nervous system, etc.
- The specific reflex points to treat with essential oils for the purpose of psycho-energetic re-balancing
- Precautions in the use of essential oils
